Types of Tooth Fractures
Not all broken teeth are the same. The type of fracture determines the urgency and the appropriate treatment:
- Minor chip: A small piece of enamel breaks off, usually without pain. Cosmetically bothersome but not immediately dangerous.
- Cracked tooth: A crack extends from the chewing surface toward the root. May cause pain when biting and sensitivity to temperature.
- Cusp fracture: A piece of the chewing surface breaks away, often around an existing filling. Typically painful but treatable with a crown.
- Serious break: A break that exposes the nerve causes significant pain, bleeding, and requires immediate care.
- Split tooth: A crack extends completely through the tooth, sometimes requiring extraction.
What to Do When a Tooth Breaks
Stay calm and take these steps while you contact our office:
- Save any broken pieces and bring them to your appointment
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm water
- If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze
- Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to minimize swelling
- Cover any sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheeks
- Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed
- Avoid chewing on the affected side
How Dr. Kim Repairs Broken Teeth
The repair approach depends on the severity of the fracture:
Dental Bonding
For minor chips, Dr. Kim applies tooth-colored composite resin directly to the damaged area, sculpting it to match the original shape. This is often completed in a single visit.
Dental Crown
When a large portion of the tooth is damaged or a significant crack is present, a crown covers and protects the remaining tooth structure. Dr. Kim fits a temporary crown the same day, with a permanent crown placed at a follow-up visit.
Root Canal and Crown
If the break exposes the nerve, root canal therapy is performed first to remove the damaged pulp and eliminate infection. A crown is then placed to restore the tooth completely.
Extraction and Replacement
In cases where the tooth is split below the gumline and cannot be saved, Dr. Kim performs a gentle extraction and discusses replacement options such as a dental implant or bridge.
Prevention
While accidents happen, you can reduce your risk of broken teeth by wearing a mouthguard during sports, avoiding chewing ice or hard candy, addressing teeth grinding with a nightguard, and keeping up with regular dental exams that catch weakened teeth before they break.
