Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth recovery and the long-term success of your dental treatment. Willis & Associates Family Dentistry Ivy – Charlottesville provides these general guidelines for common procedures. Dr. Michelle Kim will also give you personalized instructions following your specific treatment.
After a Dental Filling
- Numbness may last 1 to 3 hours — avoid chewing on the treated side until feeling returns
- Mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal for a few days
- If your bite feels uneven after numbness wears off, call our office for a quick adjustment
- Maintain regular brushing and flossing around the filled tooth
After a Dental Crown
- Avoid sticky or hard foods for 24 hours after placement
- Some sensitivity around the crowned tooth is normal for several days
- If you have a temporary crown, avoid chewing gum and be gentle when flossing
- Contact us if the temporary crown loosens or comes off
After a Tooth Extraction
- Bite gently on the gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to control bleeding
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling
- Eat soft foods (yogurt, applesauce, soup) for the first 24 to 48 hours
- Do not use a straw, smoke, or spit forcefully for at least 72 hours to protect the blood clot
- Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed
After Teeth Whitening
- Avoid dark-colored foods and beverages (coffee, red wine, berries) for 48 hours
- Some tooth sensitivity is normal and typically subsides within a few days
- Use a sensitivity toothpaste if discomfort persists
- Follow any take-home whitening tray instructions provided by our team
