Welcome to Charlottesville
Moving to a new town means rebuilding a small army of trusted people — a doctor, a mechanic, a barber, and yes, a dentist. It is one of those tasks that slides down the list until a tooth starts aching, at which point you are choosing a stranger under pressure. This guide is our attempt to make it easier: how to evaluate a dental practice in a town you barely know, how to move your records, and what a good first visit should feel like — wherever you end up going.
What to Look for in a New Dentist
Reviews help, but they mostly measure friendliness. Here is what we would actually look for after three decades in this community:
- Who owns the practice. Doctor-owned offices answer to their patients; corporate-owned chains answer to production targets. Ask directly — a practice worth trusting will not be offended.
- How they talk about treatment. A good dentist explains findings in plain language, shows you what they see on the imaging, and offers options — including the option to wait. Be wary of long, urgent treatment plans on day one.
- Modern diagnostics. Digital scanning and 3D imaging are not luxuries anymore; they mean smaller problems get caught earlier and treated more conservatively.
- Whether they can handle an emergency. Ask if same-day urgent visits are available. When you are new in town, that safety net matters most.

Transferring Your Dental Records
This is easier than most people expect. Call or email your previous dental office and ask them to send your records — X-rays, treatment history, and notes — to your new practice; a quick signed release form is usually all they need. Most offices transfer records digitally within a few days, and your prior X-rays can spare you from unnecessary re-imaging. If you choose us, our front office will handle the request for you: just bring your old practice's name and phone number to your first visit, or share it when you call.
What a Good First Visit Looks Like
A first appointment should feel like a conversation, not a conveyor belt. Expect an unhurried discussion of your history and goals, a comprehensive exam with current imaging, and a clear, no-pressure review of what the dentist found. You should leave understanding the state of your mouth and what, if anything, comes next — and you should never feel cornered into same-day decisions about major work. Our first visit page walks through exactly how we structure that appointment, and our new patient hub covers forms, scheduling, and comfort options.
Why Our Ivy Road Location Is Convenient
If your move landed you west of town — Ivy, Free Union, or the neighborhoods along the 250 corridor — location gets simple. Willis & Associates Family Dentistry Ivy sits at 2216 Ivy Rd #205, on Route 250 (Ivy Road), about 8 minutes west of UVA Grounds. That puts us right on Route 250 between the countryside and the city, on the road most residents west of Charlottesville already drive daily, without downtown parking headaches. Check our service areas to see the communities we serve.
No Dental Insurance Lined Up Yet?
Relocation often comes with a benefits gap — a new job's coverage has not kicked in, or you are self-employed in your new chapter. You do not need to postpone care. The Virginia Dental Club, our membership plan, covers preventive care and discounts other treatment without any insurance at all — a straightforward bridge (or long-term alternative) while you get settled.
A Gentle Introduction to Our Practice
Since you are reading this on our site, a brief and honest introduction: Willis & Associates Family Dentistry Ivy is a doctor-owned practice — doctor-owned, with over 30 years of trusted service in this community. We practice conservative, explain-everything dentistry with modern tools like iTero digital scanning, CBCT 3D imaging, and Overjet AI diagnostics, we see whole families from first teeth to dentures, and we keep room in the schedule for same-day emergency visits. Routine exams and cleanings are the front door for most new patients.
