A Virginia Dentist, by Way of Most of Virginia
Dr. Sophia Ellia was born in Texas and raised in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Stafford, and Fredericksburg, so she has lived in nearly every corner of the Commonwealth. She practices between two of our offices, seeing patients here on Ivy Road in Charlottesville and at Crozet Family Dental, and she spends her weekends on the trails of Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge.
She provides comprehensive general dentistry for patients of all ages. Her approach starts before any instrument comes out: she listens first. Every treatment plan begins with a plain-language conversation about what she sees, what the options are, and the honest benefits and trade-offs of each, because good dentistry is a decision you make together, not one handed down from behind a mask.
Education and Training
Dr. Ellia graduated summa cum laude from Christopher Newport University's honors program with two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology and one in Biochemistry. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry, where she received the school's Certificate of Honor, awarded for one of the highest grade point averages in her graduating class. She completed an MBA at WVU's John Chambers College of Business and Economics along the way.
She was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society, and is a member of the American Dental Association and Delta Sigma Delta International Dental Fraternity. She keeps those memberships active alongside a steady continuing education habit that keeps her current as the field moves.
How She Practices
Her word for it is partnership. She explains the basis for each treatment option, the benefits and the risks, in plain language, and the decision gets made together, so you leave confident in what was chosen and why. Listening comes first because, in her view, care cannot be right if the dentist and the patient are not working from the same page.
Away from the Office
You will find her on a Shenandoah trailhead, deep in a book, or mid-project with a crochet hook. She is always trying a new craft, which her patients will recognize as the same curiosity she brings to staying current in modern dentistry.
