Oral Sedation Dentistry in Ivy, VA

For patients who need more than laughing gas to feel at ease, oral sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation that makes even lengthy or complex dental procedures feel effortless. Dr. Michelle Kim at Willis & Associates Family Dentistry Ivy – Charlottesville offers oral sedation for patients throughout the Ivy and Charlottesville area.

What Is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription sedative medication, typically a benzodiazepine, about an hour before your dental appointment. By the time you arrive at our Ivy Road office, you will feel deeply relaxed, drowsy, and calm. While you remain conscious enough to respond to Dr. Kim’s instructions, most patients feel so comfortable that they have little or no memory of the procedure afterward.

Who Is Oral Sedation For?

Oral sedation is recommended for patients who experience:

  • Severe dental anxiety or phobia that prevents them from seeking care
  • Difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia alone
  • A history of traumatic dental experiences
  • A need for multiple or lengthy procedures in a single visit
  • A strong gag reflex that nitrous oxide alone does not adequately manage

Many patients who have avoided the dentist for years find that oral sedation allows them to comfortably receive the care they have been postponing.

How Oral Sedation Works

Before Your Appointment

Dr. Kim prescribes the sedative medication during a preliminary visit or consultation. You will receive specific instructions about when to take the medication, fasting requirements, and what to wear for your appointment.

During Your Appointment

Because the medication takes effect before you arrive, you will need someone to drive you to and from our office. Once you are settled in the treatment chair, our team monitors your vital signs throughout the procedure. Local anesthesia is still used to numb the treatment area, but under oral sedation, the injection itself is barely noticed.

After Your Appointment

The sedative effects gradually wear off over several hours. Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions until the medication has fully cleared your system, usually by the following morning.

Is Oral Sedation Safe?

Oral sedation has an excellent safety record when administered by a qualified dentist. Dr. Kim reviews your complete medical history and current medications before prescribing a sedative to ensure there are no contraindications. Continuous monitoring during your procedure provides an additional layer of safety.

Combining Sedation Methods

In some cases, Dr. Kim may combine oral sedation with nitrous oxide for an even deeper level of relaxation. This approach is particularly helpful for patients with severe phobia or for exceptionally long procedures. Every decision is based on your individual needs and comfort level.
